This design usually consists of two parts: a metal base (containing a spring mechanism) welded to the body of the chapter and a metal flap that can be opened and closed. When worn, the flap is pressed down to expose the tip of the needle, and when the flap is released after passing through clothing, the spring mechanism locks it securely in place. Butterfly clasp significantly improves the firmness and safety, the needle tip is effectively covered, not easy to hook or accidentally open, is the first choice of many high-quality badges, military and police badges. However, its structure is more complex, slightly more costly and slightly thicker.
For scenarios where the badge needs to be removed frequently, to avoid puncturing clothing, or for use on items with smooth surfaces (e.g., leather bags, laptop cases), the Magnetic Clasp offers an elegant solution. It consists of two parts: a strong magnet piece fixed to the back of the chapter body and another magnet piece (sometimes with stickers or pins) placed on the inside of the garment. The two are held together by magnetic force. Its advantage is to wear and take off extremely convenient, completely non-destructive clothing, especially suitable for children, fine fabrics (silk, cashmere) or temporary wear needs. However, its shortcomings are also prominent: limited magnetic force, the thickness and material requirements (too thick or low iron content of the fabric adsorption is weak), easy to fall off under strenuous activities, and the attached magnet piece may bring discomfort or affect the clothing flatness.
The Prickly Horse Pin represents another extremely strong design. It is usually a thicker, sharper metal pin that protrudes vertically from the body of the medallion and is used in conjunction with a separate metal clip. To wear, the Stabbing Horse Pin is pushed firmly through thicker materials (e.g., leather, canvas backpacks, hats), and then the clip is snapped on the back of the medallion body to secure the tip. This design provides extreme resistance to pulling and tugging and is virtually impossible to accidentally dislodge, making it a common choice for use on motorcycle club badges (cuts), heavy clothing or gear. However, its relatively rough installation process can cause permanent puncture damage to the carrier and the sharp pin point is a safety hazard when the clip is not snapped in place.
Therefore, the clasp on the back of a metal badge is far more than a simple accessory; it is the bridge between the badge and the wearer, a sophisticated combination of function, safety, convenience and aesthetics. Understanding the characteristics of these clasps helps us choose the most appropriate badge for our specific needs or make more informed design decisions when customizing.
